21 Sept UN International Day of Peace - Sydney Sikhs particiapting in 24 Hours Peace Prayer Vigil

A CALL TO THE PEACE VIGIL - 2008

When people gather together under a united banner, all things are possible.\
As you may be aware, in 1981, the United Nations declared 21 September a day for all nations to commemorate and reflect on peace and non-violence throughout our communities.

Sydney began the inaugural Peace Vigil in 2006, with hundreds of people turned out to celebrate this significant day. Sydney Sikhs, particularly Sikh youth, have actively participated in this program ever since. During the 2006 and 2007 vigils, Sikh youth contibuted by offering an hour of prayers for peace. The 2007 vigil was followed by an award ceremony held at Revesby Gurdwara of Sydney wherein Ms Biannca Pace, Chairperson of the Ministry for Peace - Australia, presented Sikh youth with "Sikh Ambassadors of Peace" awards.

This year, Sikhs will be leading the "Peace/Prayer Vigil" for two hours, from 3pm to 5pm as per following program

Please come and join on this day and let us unite together with peace groups, organisations, communities, individuals, government agencies and followers of all faiths in harmoniously celebrating the importance of peace.

7th Annual Kirtan Competition Deemed A Success

(Report compiled by Jasmeen Kaur Malhotra)

The hall of the Revesby Gurdwara continuously echoed following words during the two days of Kirtan competition: "Shabad Guru Da, Raag Guru De, Te, Saaz Guru De" as most of the competitors sang shabad in Nirdharit Raags and eight of them used traditional tanti saaz (string instruments).

This year's Annual Bhai Hira Singh Ragi Memorial Shabad Gayan Competition was a resounding success (no pun intended!), with 197 entries in 17 categories by 135 participants from the ages of just 2 to 21. The size of the competition required it to run over two days, the 18th and 19th of July, 2008 at Gurdwara Sri Guru Singh Sabha, Revesby.
