7th Annual Shabad Gayan (Sikh Classical Music) Competition 2008 Sydney Australia

Registration and Rules of the competition

We are happy to inform you that the 7th Annual Gurbani Shabad singing competition is being held at Revesby Gurudwara Sahib, 14-18, The River Road, Revesby NSW.

AGE Groups (to be calculated as on 18th July 2008)

Group S (solo)

5 yrs & under

 

Group J (solo):

5 to 8 yrs

 

Grp A (solo):

8 to 10 yrs

Group B (solo)

10 to 12 yrs

 

Group C (solo):

12 to 14 yrs

 

Grp D (solo):

14 - 16 yrs

Group E (solo)

16 to 18 yrs

All ages playing instruments eg tabla, rabab, etc

IN ORDER TO ELIMINATE PAPERWORK ON THE DAY, ALL COMPETITORS *MUST* REGISTER BEFORE 13th JULY ’08 AND LODGE A REFUNDABLE DEPOSIT.

Final paperwork will be completed on this date and no further changes made. We request that a $5 deposit be made for each solo entry and $25 for each Jatha. This deposit will be refunded upon attendance at the competition.

Parklea Gurdwara (Upper Hall): 5pm–7pm; Saturdays, 21st & 28th June, 5th & 12th July 08

Revesby Gurdwara (Langar Hall): Sat 6–8pm & Sun 11am-1pm; 21,22,27,28 June & 5,6,12,13 July 08

St Ives Gurdwara: 12noon to 2pm Sundays; 22nd & 29th June & 6th & 13th July 08

Minto Gurdwara: 12 to 2pm Sundays; 6th & 13th July 08.

Austral Gurdwara: 21st & 29th June 08

Glendening School: 4pm–5pm Sundays, 6th & 13th July 08

Ramgarhia Gurdwara: 6pm – 7.30pm, 6th July 08.

Penrith Gurdwara: 6pm – 7.30pm 13th July 08

Main Rules

1.     Compulsory dress code for all groups except “S” Group: Punjabi dress with Dastar/Dupatta of Blue, Black, white or Kesri colour

2.     Competitor (Solo) will be given 5 to 10 minutes, warning bell will ring after 9 minutes. For group participation time allowed is 8 to 12 minutes, warning bell will ring after 11 minutes.

3.     Only one accompanist (Tabla) allowed for solo competition. (make your own arrangements)

4.     Bonus marks for singing in Nirdharit Raags and also for singing by memorizing, without use of notes, Amrit Kirtan, etc.

5.    

 

Bonus Marks for singing without Harmonium and with string instruments like Taanpura, violin, Rabab, etc.

6.     Negative marks for singing in film tunes & using electronic key board.

7.     All the participants to report 15 minutes before the start, that is at 4.45pm on Friday & at 9.45am on Saturday. Late comers will be disqualified.

8.     Bonus marks to group participants playing instruments along with singing.

Additional Rules for Groups D, E & F

1.        Singing by memorising without using notes, Amrit Kirtan etc.

2.        Introduction in Punjabi.

Instruments Solo Rules

1. Introduction instrument & item to be played (swj AqyAvwj dI jwnkwrI[)

Main Assessment Criterion

1.    Clear & correct pronunciation (SuD gurbwxI aucwrx) & time limit.

2.     Tune and beat (sur qwl Aqy rs)

3.      Overall performance which includes dress, Gurudwara etiquette, face expression, etc

4.    Introduction of Shabad in Punjabi before the start.

Awards & Prizes

1        Medal, certificates & gifts for all the participants.

2        Gift vouchers worth $50, $30 & $20 for 1st, 2nd & 3rd position, respectively, under each solo group

3        Running Trophy for Group choir winner

4       Running Trophy for the best male & female performer based on the overall performance among all the groups and skills shown such as vocal, instrumental, etiquettes, dress, etc.
